All about bottle feeding

by Kimberly Schoobaar To December 26, 2020

Breastfeeding is more often recommended and almost over praised. But what if it can't be done? Fortunately, there are alternatives.

Bottle feeding or breastfeeding?

This is often a tough choice. And for some of us, no choice at all. Some women cannot breastfeed. This is often due to various reasons. But that doesn't matter. Bottle formula is so imitated that all the necessary nutrients of breast milk are incorporated into the powder. So this way your baby still gets the good substances.

Which bottle should I use?

There are many different bottles, which means there are many choices. It is best to go for a bottle with a nipple. This bottle has an anti-colic valve and because of the S-shape there is a constant flow in the bottle.

How do I prepare the bottle?

Making a bottle for baby is not difficult in itself. However, it is important to follow the steps carefully;

  • Wash your hands thoroughly.
  • Make sure the bottle and teat are clean.
  • Check the package to add the correct amount.
  • Fill the bottle with cold tap water. (Do not use tap water if you have lead pipes).
  • Heat the bottle in a bottle warmer. Warm the bottle until it reaches a temperature between 30 and 35 C.

Bottle feeding tips

  • Make sure your baby is in a relaxed position.
  • Place your baby snugly in your arms and make sure they are sitting up a little bit.
  • Change arms at each feeding.
  • If necessary, use a nursing pillow
  • Do not twist the bottle cap too tightly because of vacuum suction.
  • Allow baby to burp during or after drinking.
  • Purchase the right teat. The bigger the baby gets, the bigger the teat should be.

Bottle feeding shelf life

Bottle formula stays good until the date indicated on the package. Make sure to keep it in a dry and cool place. After opening the package it is good for about 4 weeks.

Do not prepare formula in advance

Here in the Netherlands, bottle feeding factories do not recommend preparing it in advance. This way, bacteria can develop in the bottle that can make your baby sick.
