Diaper rash; what to do?

by Kimberly Schoobaar To December 26, 2020

Your baby is crying. You don't know exactly what it is until you change the diaper. Oh oh red bottoms, this can only mean 1 thing. Diaper rash. This rash is very annoying for a baby, it itches and can be very painful. But for every problem there is a solution.

What is diaper rash?

Diaper rash is a rash often caused by poop and pee. Because this is often wet, the skin inside the diaper can begin to chafe. Then red painful chafing spots appear. If the baby has a diaper on for a long time, the likelihood of diaper rash also increases. This also has additional consequences. If the diaper is on for too long, mold can develop here. Because the baby's skin is now even softer and often broken, the fungi can get into the skin.

Diaper rash symptoms

If you suspect your little one has diaper rash, go through this list to see if the symptoms match;

  • The skin is red, chapped and irritated.
  • The skin where there is a rash may feel warm.
  • Your baby cries more and is easily irritated.
  • There may be blisters on the skin.

What to do in case of diaper rash

  • First of all, make sure you change baby's diaper at least 8 times a day.
  • Use a good (zinc ointment) cream  especially for chapped skin on baby's bottom.
  • Do not put the diaper on too tightly.
  • Use baby wipes without alcohol and perfume.
  • Wash the skin with a warm washcloth.

Preventing diaper rash

It is important to change your baby's diaper at least 8 times a day. If your baby is in a diaper too long, the skin becomes softer and moister, increasing the chances of chafing. Take good care of the skin. When you bathe your baby, make sure to wash the skin gently but thoroughly, Avoid soap with alcohol in it. Use a mild baby soap. Dry the skin thoroughly. After washing your baby, use a baby body lotion. This prevents dry skin.
