How long does it take for a baby to be in deep sleep?

by Lisa SEO To September 15, 2022

The birth of a child, brings many changes. The fact that parents now have responsibility for a baby takes some getting used to. Conversely, the baby has to get used to his new environment. In addition to the advice you will receive from the Childbirth Clinic, we want to provide you with this information. You can pick out for yourself what suits you and your baby or family.

Sleeping baby

All babies sleep a lot in the first period after birth. How much exactly is hard to say. It varies from ten to 23 hours. However, it is possible to predict somewhat what the sleep pattern of a healthy, on-time baby looks like compared to an adult. The sleep cycle (from deep to light sleep) lasts approximately:

  • 90 minutes in an adult;
  • 45 minutes in a newborn;
  • 50 minutes in a baby between three and eight months of age.

So babies often sleep for periods of 45 or 50 minutes or multiples thereof. So they sleep for 45 to 50 minutes, 90 to 100 minutes, 135 to 150 minutes or 180 to 200 minutes before waking again. The depth of sleep also varies considerably. The ratio of deep sleep to light sleep is as follows:

  • 80% deep sleep and 20% light sleep in an adult;
  • 50% deep sleep and 50% light sleep in a premature baby;
  • 20% deep sleep and 80% light sleep in a premature baby.

This partly explains why little ones are awake at night more often than their parents. It can take weeks for a baby to start sleeping a little longer during the night. It is also fairly easy to predict how long a baby may be awake. The times below are for babies born on time.

Night rhythm premature baby

If your baby was born prematurely, these times apply from the due date (the date your baby should have been born). Your baby's waking time may be slightly longer or shorter, but usually there is not a big difference.

Advice for getting a baby to sleep faster

Comfortable sleepwear

For newborn babies up to 7 months, it is recommended to keep an empty bed for baby's safety. This means keeping the crib free of bed bumpers, blankets, pillows and soft cuddly toys. Therefore, it is important that the baby has a soft and comfortable sleep suit wears in which he or she can easily fall asleep.

Using sleep trainers

A baby sleep trainer helps get a baby to sleep. For example, they play lullabies or project shapes on the wall, which calms a baby down. Moreover, they also feature soothing tunes that help the baby fall asleep sooner. In this way, you can build a sleep rhythm for both children and babies.

Do not disturb while sleeping

Finally, an important piece of advice is not to disturb your baby while he is sleeping. ent you plan to go out the door with your baby, at the first signs of sleep, put him already in the stroller and put it in a quiet place in the house. This way you won't disturb the baby while he is sleeping. Pay attention to body temperature (don't put it too hot or too cold).
