My child is going to school for the first time!

by Kimberly Schoobaar To December 26, 2020

How exciting. Your little one is going to elementary school for the first time. This is often something every mom would prefer to put off for a while. But you will see that your child is going to enjoy it. But how do I prepare my child? Or what if he or she is going to miss me too much? I'm going to help you with this.

Compulsory education

From the age of 5, your child is officially subject to compulsory education. But children often attend elementary school from the age of 4. Then they enter group 1.

How do I prepare my child?

The first day of school is not only exciting for the parents, but also for the child. Therefore, it is important that you give notice well in advance so that the little one can prepare for this. Before you send your child to elementary school, it is important that your child can play together. They learn this at school, of course, but it is more fun for the child himself, because it makes it easier for them to make friends. Try role-playing with your child. For example, you are the teacher and your child is a student. Then, for example, keep a schedule that day just like in elementary school. That way your child knows what to expect. Many elementary schools do "wake-up days. That way the children have an idea of what it will be like and they are not in for surprises.

Going to the bathroom alone

This is still a little thing. At home, mom and dad can help. But in elementary school, you have to do it all by yourself. To give your child a hand you can practice with them. Also, put them on easy clothes that are not difficult to take off or put on.

What should I give my child?

Make sure your child always has enough food and drink with them. You can buy a small lunch box and a cup bottle for this purpose. It is helpful to give them an extra pair of clothes for when they have peed their pants. This often happens in the first few weeks. It is also helpful to give them a small backpack with the items in it.

Tips for preparation

  • Teach them some time awareness. This is easier for your child so he or she knows what the teacher means by soon or so on, for example.
  • Clearly explain that you will be picking him or her up again soon, so that they are somewhat reassured.
  • Prepare the things you will need for the first day of school.

Practicing together

Practicing together what your child learned at school is very important and good for development. For example, learn numbers and colors by asking them questions. For example, what color is this stuffed toy or how many apples are in the bowl.
